TSA vs Privatized Screening

by Jeff Price | Nov 1, 2010 | Aviation Security, General Aviation Airport Security, Introduction to Screening

The issue with privatized screening is very interesting and very misunderstood by the public. Pre 9/11, the screening was given to private companies who were contracted by the airlines at the lowest bidder. The standards were “upheld” by the FAA and those...

Removing Security Screening from Airports?

by Jeff Price | Sep 21, 2010 | Aviation Security, General Aviation Aircraft Operator Security, General Aviation Airport Security, Introduction to Screening

There have been several reports in the news lately of airports across the country having their security screening equipment removed by the TSA.  This is actually pretty common as long as TSA is the owner of the equipment. Prior to 9/11 various entities were...

Light Sabers on the prohibited item list?

by Jeff Price | Apr 17, 2010 | Aviation Security, Commercial Aviation Aircraft Operator Security, Introduction to Screening, Policies and Procedures, The Role of Government

I guess the first interesting question is, why are light sabers on the prohibited items list? Now, I was there in 1977 when Star Wars first came out, and I’ve seen all the movies plenty of times over — and as much as I’d love to have a light saber,...

Another threat, another box

by Jeff Price | Mar 6, 2010 | Aviation Security, Current Affairs, Introduction to Screening, Passenger and Baggage Screening

The problem with new threats to aviation is that every time there is another threat, we get a new box at the checkpoint. At some point, we’re going to run out of space before we run out of threats. While many in the industry, particularly TSA Federal Security...

by Jeff Price | Feb 12, 2010 | Aviation Security, Current Affairs, Introduction to Screening, Policies and Procedures

TSA announced today that approximately 10,000 of their workers will began the process of getting Secret clearances so they can receive better intelligence related to the current threats. Click here. While I applaud TSA’s latest action, I’m stunned that it...

Hands down the pants, hands down the pants, looking like a fool with your hands down your pants!

by Jeff Price | Feb 10, 2010 | Aviation Security, Current Affairs, Introduction to Screening

Hands down the pants, hands down the pants, looking like a fool with your hands down your pants! Recently, travelers in Canada have been asked to stick their hands down their pants, or in their pockets, so that screeners can swab their hands (after the fact) to...

A year later, the bill proposing to abolish the TSA is sitting in committee taking a very long nap. This is the way Congress quietly disposes of ideas it doesn’t want to touch (S.1180 – Abolish TSA Act of 2025 has been in the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation since March 27). The bill raises an important question: if the TSA were dismantled, what would replace it? The blog article below, written last year, still offers some useful perspective as you consider your own position on the issue.
